Twitter is one of the tech wonders that really took off last year. According to Compete.com number of unique visitors to Twitter has increased almost 10 times from Dec '07 to Dec '08. If we also account for the fact that most Twitter users use it from desktop applications that are not easy to track, the actual usage numbers are probably even more impressive. No doubt, that's a mind-bobbling success for any Web-based business.
But what is Twitter?

The US economy is crumbling around us, unemployment is reaching record-breaking highs, and I’m supposed to focus precious brainpower on how and when to poke, tweet, and ping my colleagues?

As more and more of the general public recognizes the power of the web as a platform for communication, collaboration and coordination, a crush of services and applications have emerged (Twitter, Facebook, Digg, del.icio.us, etc). No one has the time to keep up with dozens of these at once, so nailing effective integration and aggregation of these services will be the next big thing in the social media world.

As technology changes, so do important life events – like an election. For me, things like twitter, flickr, and twittervotereport.com have significantly impacted my election year experience.
Jeff:
I have been Tweeting more and more lately just to see what happens. So far, seems like not much, but I am catching up on a lot of ideas from people I hardly know. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Twitter and think it has potential, but there are a few features I have dreamed up that I think would make it even better.
