Just in time for the holidays is an Open Atrium security and maintenance release! With security updates for views, a massive performance update for strongarm (page load times cut in half in some cases), and bug fixes in the Atrium features. Making Open Atrium faster, stronger, and more secure.

I’ve been building web applications for the government for more than 10 years, so I’m more than a little familiar with Section 508 and what it means to develop a web site the complies with it. But recently, my team and I have gained a much deeper understanding of accessibility by participating in an experiential learning session led by Catharine McNally. I’ve gained new levels of realization about what really makes content on the web accessible and usable for all individuals.

Today we are announcing the purchase of Open Atrium, a team collaboration tool and Managing News, a pluggable news and data aggregator both developed on Drupal. This represents the first step in a new collaboration and a far-reaching partnership with our friends at Development Seed who created these distributions and with whom we share a love of developing great open source products.

As the Drupal community and lots of newcomers all descend on San Francisco this week, I am making just one (maybe not so bold) prediction: This conference is the tipping point. Drupal is officially big. Why is this all happening now? It is likely a combination of many things: maturity of the product itself, size of the installed base, growth in community popularity and participation, lack of affordable alternatives for comparable web 2.0 functionality, etc. I actually prefer to view it more as the maturity of Drupal as a platform through which the Drupal technology community is pushing Drupal forward - potentially straight into enterprise software territory. Here is my "top ten style" list of the technology trends I see fueling this growth.

As a leader in the news industry, the Knight Foundation is transforming the way communities and journalists create and disseminate content. Each year the foundation grants millions of dollars to this initiative and while it prides itself on giving to a wide range of projects, there does seem to be an exciting underlying trend¬open source.

Earlier today, I posted an article form Gartner about how companies could use Web 2.0 to better their business. This afternoon, I came across a post on Click Z cautioning corporate sites against trying to create communities when it doesn’t make sense. I think there’s a middle ground. The key is simply knowing your audience and engaging them in the right way.
