Jeff:
As we usher in this new era of open data and government transparency by making raw data available to the public in platform independent formats on Data.gov, we could be overlooking one of the simplest and most sincere opportunities to show what the open data movement is about: Linked Data. Linked data is the key to connecting government data sets to other government data and external data sources on the web.
I am hoping to create interest for a community-led project to prototype an RDF enabled dataset for Data.gov and link it to other related data sources in the Linked Data Cloud.

Yesterday, I mentioned that Phase2's Jeff and Frank will be speaking on a panel this afternoon at the 2009 Semantic Technology Conference. If you are in San Jose, or following the conference from afar, you should check out Tom Tague's keynote this morning on "How Semantic Technologies Introduce a New Paradigm for Interaction." Tague has an incredible ability to explain semantic technologies and their importance to anyone from developers to journalists.

Semantic Web, a specification born in the 1980s, has had a tumultuous history, to say the least. Lately, it has been undergoing a renaissance period, with great renewed interest and large internet voices beginning to herald the technology. The National Institute of Health, MIT, and Yahoo are all among a growing industry push for Semantic Web. Given the publicity surrounding Semantic Web, I thought I would take a moment to delve into why you, too, should be sitting with ears perked for news on Semantic Web.

In the world of shrinking newsrooms and increased demand to “feed the beast,” many online news operations are being asked to do a great deal – but with very few resources. And with different news and information sources, portals and syndication sites popping up, the competition for readers (read: advertising dollars) is fierce.
