Jeff:
Yesterday, I had the privilege of moderating a panel session at the Online News Association's 2009 Conference in San Francisco on the use of semantic web technologies for publishers entitled "Can the Semantic Web Really Save your Site?" Our 3 guests included two CTOs for major online news organizations and a semantic web author and technology expert. I was really looking forward to this and was not let down at the caliber of knowledge these guys brought to the table (literally).

Tom Tague, of the OpenCalais Initiative—a Phase2 Technology and Thomson Reuters partnership, gave the keynote address to the 2009 Semantic Technology Conference attendees in San Jose a couple of weeks ago. He presented an exciting vision for the future of semantic technologies and introduced the concept of a new paradigm for interaction.

In a few weeks the Washington DC metro region will be hosting our very own VoCamp. VoCampDC will be held at the end of next month, May 30-31. Sign up is full but there is plenty of space on the waiting list if you are interested in participating. Add your name to the list on the VoCampDC wiki: http://groups.google.com/group/vocampdc.

World Bank has been collecting massive amounts of data, for the past 50+ years, and now possesses one of the richest repository of information about economic development in the world. Phase2 Technology had the pleasure of helping World Bank architect and engineer a new major release of its Open API 2.0
As we steadily approach the next era online where open data and the semantic web gives us more than we ever dreamed, the launch of each new major web-services API is significant. When a rich and unique data repository like the World Bank's opens its data for free, a world of possibilities opens up.

The movement to get to a more "Semantic Web" progressed further last weekend. The first VoCamp in the United States, and third ever, was held in Austin this past Saturday and Sunday. What is VoCamp?

In preparation for the new 4.0 release of OpenCalais on March 15th, we have done some massive upgrades on the Drupal Calais modules. While many of these upgrades were under the hood, there are also some pretty great user accessible features to make you smile.

DrupalConDC 2009 is just around the corner and we are starting to think seriously about the topics the Phase2 Technology dev team have proposed. Here are the three sessions we are most eager to discuss with the community. Please give us a vote on the site (http://dc2009.drupalcon.org/sessions) if you think you would be interested in these topics.

Semantic Web, a specification born in the 1980s, has had a tumultuous history, to say the least. Lately, it has been undergoing a renaissance period, with great renewed interest and large internet voices beginning to herald the technology. The National Institute of Health, MIT, and Yahoo are all among a growing industry push for Semantic Web. Given the publicity surrounding Semantic Web, I thought I would take a moment to delve into why you, too, should be sitting with ears perked for news on Semantic Web.

Today Phase2 Technology, in association with Thomson Reuters, launched a big update to the set of Calais for Drupal modules. This marks the first of many feature sets to be released through the end of the year and beyond. These releases are intended to be part of a larger toolset for publishers and large content providers using Drupal. These latest updates are largely focused on the end-user and appeal to publishers. We think they will be useful to all Drupal developers, though, as well as those interested in Semantic technology.
