Envisioning an Open Source Product Marketplace: Could it Work?

Karen:

What I've learned in 18 months of Drupal product management is this: monetization in open source communities is prickly. Monetization of products in Drupal is scary -- done right, it could build a vibrant economy around the open source software we know and love, making it stronger while people make a living. Done wrong, and it could alienate the community, deprecate innovation, and ultimately harm the open source project.

City's OpenPublic Site Prioritizes Info Access for Citizens

Karen:

In the Town of Lake Clarke Shores, Florida, citizens no longer have to wait to access valuable information about their town hall meetings, thanks to a new web site powered by OpenPublic and built by the team at Big Couch Media Group. Seeing a need for not only a site makeover but an overhaul of the tools that community members needed most, John Studdard and the Big Couch team put OpenPublic to the test, utilizing the responsive design theme and maximizing the available tools for citizen engagement, while also building new functionality for the platform. I sat down with John this week to hear more about the build.

A Code-Free Explanation of Drupal Distributions

Karen:

I'm reading a book on financial modeling, where the author says, "if you can model it, you can understand it." Try to move past what a dork I am for reading that book, and I'll explain. Basically, if you can set up the pieces of a business into something measurable and tangible, the valuable pieces become clear. I think a similar concept applies to systems like Drupal: "if you can understand it, you can build on it." Or another way: broad adoption of a concept requires that someone besides developers understand it.

"8 Minute Apps" Session Builds an App Start to Finish.

Karen:

This weekend at DrupalCamp Atlanta, I had the pleasure of presenting with Jay Callicott from Mediacurrent on how to build an App for a Drupal distribution. Ok, so it wasn't really 8 minutes, and it wasn't exactly live - it was more like the cooking show kind of live -- but it did cover all the steps of building an App for a Drupal distribution, start to finish.

Mergers & Acquisitions in Drupal: A Conversation Ignited

Karen:

I'll admit it: I think conference sessions, in general, can be a little dull. Okay, what I mean is that they're usually snoozefests. Unless I'm watching P2's own Samantha Warren speak passionately about typography (and if you've never heard her speak, you should go do that), I've got a bit of an attention-span problem.

The Open App Standard: Better Usability, Drupalwide

Karen:

It's no secret: the concept of "apps" in Drupal is a hot topic. The Drupal community is experimenting with different concepts around apps, and has launched the first few "app store" concepts. At Phase2, we developed the Apps module (now available on drupal.org) and built an app console into OpenPublic. And the UK firm SubHub launched their first "app store" concept with their SaaS offering earlier this year
