SEO? Check. (No Really, Just Check the Box)

Kelly turned me onto a Drupal module this week that has already proven extremely useful. SEO Checklist by Volacci not only provides a recommended list of actions, but once installed and enabled, actually scans through your installation and notes those areas where your site is specifically deficient, and links them right from the admin menu.

This has proven already to be useful on clients with aging Drupal installations who are getting checkups on their own sites. However, I find that some of the specific actions and recommendations are best viewed as guidelines, as our own experience might point to different modules for different purposes. For example, Mollom is quickly becoming the CAPTCHA module of choice, but it's not yet presented as an option in that section of the checklist. There are plenty of such examples where you may be using a particular solution that's not in the recommended list.

But that doesn't make this module any less useful. By mixing a simple scan-and-recommend list such as this with a little trend knowledge gives you a single place to get a snapshot of what you're doing and what you could be doing better, as well as a good place for developers to check off each concept, if not each specific recommendation. I hope this module continues to be improved by incorporating the latest modules and trends, because it's well worth the installation to get a basic idea how SEO-friendly your site is.
