The Next VoCamp to be in Washington, DC
In a few weeks the Washington DC metro region will be hosting our very own VoCamp. VoCampDC will be held at the end of next month, May 30-31. Sign up is full but there is plenty of space on the waiting list if you are interested in participating. Add your name to the list on the VoCampDC wiki. There is also a Google Group.
The "Vo" in VoCamp stands for vocabulary and represents the purpose for these informal gatherings that are occurring all over the world. I blogged a few weeks ago about the first VoCamp in the US, VoCamp Austin. After that, interest began in DC for holding one of our own. VoCampDC will be second one in the US. The DC area has an active Semantic Web community.
The Semantic Web Gang, a monthly podcast on the semantic web, discussed the reasons for holding VoCamps to work on vocabularies in April's episode. One thing they address is why VoCamps were started and have caught on internationally. The need for vocabularies is a challenge to growth and adoption of Semantic Web technologies.
The VoCamp wiki describes it: "VoCamp is a series of informal events where people can spend some dedicated time creating lightweight vocabularies/ontologies for the Semantic Web/Web of Data. The emphasis of the events is not on creating the perfect ontology in a particular domain, but on creating vocabs that are good enough for people to start using for publishing data on the Web.".
There is also a VoCamp Baltimore in the works at UMBC. Add your name to the wiki if you are interested in that one.
