Giving Back: ADCMW’s Drupal Site

Samantha:

This non-profit organization has been a fixture in the Washington, DC, creative industry for more than 50 years. Over the past decade in particular, their predominantly print-oriented roots have started encompassing the online realm, and so this all-volunteer organization was needing some new technology infrastructure to accommodate their membership.

The new adcmw.org -- which launched after a few months of concerted production -- features beautiful and typographic design, which prominently displays the educational and inspirational values that ADCMW holds dear. Being that it is community oriented organization, I wanted the front page to pull in user generated content from everywhere from Flickr to ADCMW's magazine, Full Bleed.

The DC area has several creative oriented organizations, but I wanted to focus on aspects of the group that sets them apart. When visiting the site you should be able to quickly scan the page and know what the organization is about, while still getting updates. The addition of RSS feeds for news, events and even job postings helps to keep people informed even if they aren't on the site.

ADCMW focuses on providing educational and inspirational resources for everyone in the art direction process, not just designers but photographers, copy writers, and even user experience professionals. This key differentiator makes for an eclectic group of passionate people with vibrant, exuberant idea exchanges. Bold colors, bright user generated photography, and Calgary Script by Alejando Paul all helps to communicate that to the end user. I hope that people will visit the site and feel inspired to get involved no matter what their expertise is.

I feel that it was a labor of love from both sides -- me as a designer for Phase2 and also as a board member for ADCMW. One of the things that I love about Phase2 is the willingness to support my volunteerism within the larger DC creative sphere.
