Ever wonder if a site is using OpenPublish?

We do. Well we used to. We've created an extension for Google Chrome to help dispel the mystery.

With the unlimited number of customizations possible in Drupal, and by extension OpenPublish, it can often to be difficult to tell if a site is built on top of these platforms. Why does anyone care, you ask? Seeing what other people have done using Drupal and OpenPublish can be a great source of inspiration for creating your own site, and can also inspire us to add new functionality to OpenPublish. Part of the beauty of open-source software is that not only can you freely use other people's code, but also that other people's work can inspire new and even cooler functionality - and that's exciting to me.

There are numerous tools and plugins dedicated to telling you what tools or CMS that 'cool site you love' is using. One of the best that I've found is Chrome Sniffer. Unfortunately, while it will tell you (rather reliably) whether a site is using Drupal or not, it will not detect OpenPublish. That's where our plugin comes in - Detect OpenPublish will tell you whether a site is running Drupal and, if so, whether it is running OpenPublish.

We hope to add detection support for other distributions of Drupal in the near future to create a tool to help you compare the different distributions and their uses.

OpenPublish 2.3 has been officially released today (10-28-10), as has a new version of the plugin.
