2008 web design trends (and why you should care)
Design may seem frivolous to a developer, but hot design trends can be more predictive of future development efforts than you think. A friend of mine recently pointed me to a current listing of 2008 web design trends. It got me to thinking about the ways in which prevalent design trends can ultimately lead to development trends. For example, take the trend of hand-written notes and paper clips. Inevitably, it wont be good enough to display static, image based information on a sticky note — people will want to have dynamically generated or CMS driven content, and they’ll want it on an angle just like a sticky note slapped hap-haphazardly to a monitor. This will undoubtedly spawn some new whiz-bang, golly-gee AJAX or Flash functionality to skew text. You get my point. So, while design may seem frivolous when it comes to development efforts, it may just be more important in spotting upcoming development requirements & trends than you might have guessed.
